Calculating Dog's Age in Equivalent Human Years

Large dogs age faster than small dogs. Calculate big breed years by multiplying real age by 5, medium dogs by 6 and small by 7.

Breed Size

All dogs develop similarly for the first 2 years. But breed size impacts how quickly they transition between life stages.

Life Stages

From birth up until age 1 (15 human years for large dogs) dogs are in the puppy learning and rapid growth phase.

Birth Through 1st Year

In developmental prime from age 1-7 , dogs' equivalent ages can be calculated: large dogs 5:1, medium 6:1, small 7:1.

Developmental Peak

Large dogs transition from mature adult to senior around age 7, medium dogs around age 9 and small dogs at 11 years old.

Adult To Senior

As dogs enter senior years, consider adjusting activity for comfort, providing supplements, more vet checkups.

Senior Years

While difficult, be realistic about breed expected lifespans as dogs enter their final life stage.
