Teach Your Dog To Grab A Object In His Mouth

Start by teaching your dog to touch a target stick. Reward touching and eventual grabbing the target.

Target

Practice having your dog grab and hold their favorite toys. Use an excited voice and reward with treats.

Familiar Objects

Say "take it" when your dog grabs an item. Reward and reinforce the cue during training.

Give Cues

Teach "give" or "drop it" so your dog learns to release objects on cue for safety.

Practice Releasing

Begin training with light, soft items your dog can comfortably hold in their mouth.

Keep It Light

For reluctant dogs, smear peanut butter or cream cheese on items to encourage picking up.

Food Lures

Never forcefully take objects from your dog's mouth. This can create a possessive behavior.
